Zohran Mamdani celebrated his win in the New York City elections by borrowing a quote from Jawaharlal Nehru’s iconic Tryst with Destiny speech. Mamdani quoted Nehru’s speech from 1947 when India marked its independence from over 200 years of British rule.
“Standing before you, I remember the words of Jawaharlal Nehru. A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends, and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance,” quoted Mamdani, adding that tonight New York has stepped from the old into the new.
Zohran Mamdani wins NYC mayoral election
Zohran Mamdani, the 34-year-old Indian-origin democratic socialist lawmaker, pulled off a stunning victory in the fiercely contested New York city mayoral elections. Zohran Mamdani gives his victory speech after winning the New York City mayoral election on Tuesday. In his first remarks after the victory, Mamdani said that future is now in their hands and they have toppled a political dynasty. “It is a mandate for change. The future is in our hands; we have toppled a political dynasty,” Mamdani said quoting India’s first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.

“We will fight for you; because we are you,” Mamdani told the people of New York after the historic win, adding that “today we have spoken in a clear voice; hope is alive.” “I will wake each morning with a singular purpose: to make this city better for you than it was the day before,” he said.
Mamdani, the Ugandan-born son of Indian origin parents—his mother is renowned filmmaker Mira Nair, and father is academic Mahmood Mamdani, defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa. He won the NYC Mayoral election, getting 948,202 votes (50.6 per cent), with 83 per cent of the votes in.
Zohran Mamdani challenges Trump in his speech
Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani tauntingly delivered a defiant message to President Donald Trump during his victory address. Mamdani said he had four words for a Trump who would surely be watching the socialist’s speech: “Turn the volume up.”

He also took a parting shot at foe Andrew Cuomo. “I wish Andrew Cuomo only the best in his private life but that [will be] the final time I utter his name,” he vowed. “I wish Andrew Cuomo only the best in private life. But let tonight be the final time I utter his name as we turn the page on a politics that abandons the many and answers only to the few.”
With Mamdani’s win, New York City and the US entered a new political and ideological era with the democratic socialist now at the helm of the citadel of capitalism.Mamdani was born and raised in Kampala, Uganda and moved to New York City with his family when he was 7. He became a naturalised US citizen only recently in 2018.
