Will Delhi’s Atal canteen, midday meals and other free food schemes continue amid commercial LPG shortage?
Administrators of Delhi’s massive community feeding programmes told TOI that daily food distribution remains stable as of Friday, even as the broader hospitality sector reels from a total suspension of commercial LPG supplies. While private restaurants across the capital warn of imminent closures, the city’s social safety nets—from Atal Canteens to school mid-day meal providers—are leaning on centralized steam-based infrastructure and strategic fuel reserves to bypass the crisis. Government officials and NGO partners have launched a series of situational assessments to ensure that over two million beneficiaries, including students and low-income workers, remain insulated from the supply shocks originating in the Middle East.

Atal Canteens Leverage Centralized Prep
Operations at Delhi’s Atal Canteens have largely escaped the initial wave of the gas crunch, primarily due to a distribution model that separates cooking from serving points. A representative at the Lajpat Nagar center told TOI that as of Wednesday morning, “there has been no problem,” noting that food for approximately 1,000 daily beneficiaries is prepared at a remote site in Mohan Estate and transported for distribution. Another official told TOI that while a prolonged shortage could create “operational challenges,” it is “unlikely that services would stop entirely”. At the Sheikh Sarai facility, workers informed TOI that their dependence on cylinders is minimal because the centralized kitchen in Ghitorni utilizes steam-based technology, potentially exempting them from the impact of LPG constraints.
Akshaya Patra and Mid-Day Meal Providers Build Buffers
The Akshaya Patra Foundation, which nourishes over 23 lakh children, reported a high level of energy resilience. Bharatarshabha Dasa, national president and trustee, told TOI that the foundation currently holds “over a month’s supply of LPG” and uses electricity-run boilers or briquettes to generate steam. Dasa told TOI that many of their kitchens are powered by PNG, ensuring that their “LPG dependency is significantly lower than what it may appear”. Meanwhile, Arun Singh Panwar, CEO of the Ekta Shakti Foundation, told TOI that the government has already begun consultations with NGOs to assess the situation. Panwar noted that the intention is to ensure beneficiaries “do not face any interruption in services,” with some stakeholders pointing to the upcoming summer vacations as a natural buffer that will soon decrease overall demand.
