Netflix announced that The Diplomat will return for season 3 with an early renewal, before season 2 even premiered. The Diplomat has another happy surprise for fans. Allison Janney and Bradley Whitford have been promoted to series regulars for the Netflix show’s fourth season, according to a report in the Deadline. Both Emmy winners will appear as guest stars in third season of ‘The Diplomat’ which will premiere on October 16.
What will be the roles of Allison Janney and Bradley Whitford?
Allison Janney plays US Vice President Grace Penn in the series. In the upcoming season, she will go on to become the President of the United States. Meanwhile, Whitford will portray First Gentleman Todd Penn, Grace’s husband.
“The Diplomat Season 4 begins production in the fall, and when it does, Allison Janney and Bradley Whitford will be returning as series regulars, alongside Kate (Keri Russell), Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell), and the rest of the political power players. Academy Award winner and seven-time Emmy Award winner, Janney currently guest stars as Vice President Grace Penn on the series, while Whitford (a three-time Emmy winner) joined the series for Season 3, guest starring as Todd Penn, according to a report by Tumdum Netflix.
“Working with Allison and Brad, watching them together again, and the off-the-charts foursome that is them with Keri and Rufus… It’s an insane bag of candy,” says creator, showrunner, and executive producer Debora Cahn. “Our expectations were high, and it blew right past them.” Executive producer Janice Williams previously told Tudum that “Bradley was the perfect addition to what is already a dream cast.”

What can you expect in The Diplomat Season 3?
The much-anticipated third season of The Diplomat will see Ambassador Kate Wyler live the particular nightmare that is getting what you want. She just accused Vice President Grace Penn of hatching a terrorist plot and admitted she’s after the VP’s job. But now the president is dead, Kate’s husband Hal may have inadvertently killed him, and Grace Penn is the leader of the free world. None of this slows Hal’s campaign to land Kate the vice presidency.
Kate steps into a role she never wanted, with a freedom she never expected, an increasingly complicated friendship with Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison (David Gyasi), and an unnerving bond with First Gentleman Todd Penn. “Season 3 flips the chessboard. Kate lives the particular nightmare that is getting what you want,” says Cahn.

Season 2 closed with a jaw-dropping cliffhanger. After Kate uncovered that Vice President Penn was behind the Season 1 attack on a British naval vessel, the finale took an even darker turn: Kate’s diplomat husband, Hal, personally informed President Rayburn (Michael McKean) of Grace’s role. The revelation was so shocking it triggered a fatal heart attack, leaving Penn to step into the presidency.
The series also stars David Gyasi, Ali Ahn, Ato Essandoh, and Rory Kinnear. You can watch Seasons 1 and 2 of The Diplomat now — before Season 3 premieres on Oct. 16.
