Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) is the state agency charged with overseeing and providing workforce development services to employers and job seekers of Texas. “The mission of TWC is to promote and support a workforce system that creates value and offers employers, families, individuals, and communities the opportunity to achieve and sustain economic prosperity,” according to Texas Rising Star.

“The aim of TWC is to strengthen the Texas economy by providing the workforce development component of the Governor’s economic development strategy. One of TWC’s major functions is to provide support services, including child care, for targeted populations participating in workforce training,” the statement read.

Eligibility for Texas Workforce Commission

Applying for Texas Workforce Commission is relatively simple, reports Marca. All you need to do is create a User ID online through the Unemployment Benefit Services website or by phone via TWC’s Tele-Serv.

To create your User ID, you’ll need your Social Security number and must provide necessary details about why you lost your job. If you meet the eligibility criteria, you can request benefits every two weeks-online or by phone.

To qualify for unemployment benefits in Texas, you must meet two key criteria:Base Period Work History: Your base period is the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before the effective date of your initial claim. TWC does not use the quarter in which you file or the one immediately before it. Instead, they use the one-year period prior to those two quarters. Type of Job Separation: If your job ended due to lack of work-not performance-you may be eligible. This includes business closures, position eliminations, or lack of available work.

If your employer cut your hours (not due to disciplinary action or your own request), you may qualify. You may also be eligible if you were terminated for reasons other than misconduct. You can also qualify if you quit due to unsafe conditions, harassment, significant changes in job terms, difficulty receiving pay, or health-related issues.

How much money will you receive?

Your benefit amount is based on the wages you earned during your base period. TWC determines your benefits by using the taxable wages your employer reported in Texas.

Though the process might seem complicated, it’s designed to provide you with financial support while you look for new job opportunities.

The TWC in a post on X said that the disaster Unemployment Assistance application deadline for counties affected by severe weather and flooding that impacted Texas starting July 2 has been extended to Sept. 29, 2025. “Texans who qualify for Disaster Unemployment Assistance will now have until September 29 to apply,” said Governor Abbott. Individuals affected by severe weather in the designated counties can apply for benefits online through Unemployment Benefit Services or by calling TWC at (800) 939-6631.
