Story of Christy Martin
Based on real events, Christy chronicles Martin, who is raised in a small-town West Virginia and rapidly achieved recognition for her talent in the ring. Under the mentorship of her trainer and manager Jim (played by Foster), who then becomes her husband, Martin rises to prominence while going through personal struggles. In the trailer, Sweeney mirrors, “I think I’ve found my thing. I know most people go their entire lives, and they don’t even know what their thing is.” Later, Foster cautions, “If you leave me, I’ll kill you.”
Behind the Scenes
Michôd, famous for The King, co-wrote the script with Mirrah Foulkes, with Katherine Fugate credited for story contributions. Sweeney and Michôd also are producers along with Kerry Kohansky-Roberts, Teddy Schwarzman, Brent Stiefel, and Justin Lothrop.
TIFF Premiere
Christy premiered at TIFF, where Sweeney’s performance rapidly ignited discussions of potential Oscar chances. The actress showcased that she trained intensively with a boxing coach, citing, “I trained two to three times a day, every day, and then while I was filming, I trained as well.”
David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter applauded the movie as “an inspirational sports movie that morphs in somewhat ungainly style into an unflinching depiction of domestic violence,” mentioning that the “movie’s secret weapon is Wever.”
