History of Army Day

Army Day marks a major milestone in India’s military history. On January 15, 1949, Lieutenant General Kodandera M Cariappa took over as the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army.

On that day, the last British Commander-in-Chief, General Francis Roy Bucher, formally handed over charge to Cariappa. The occasion later became Army Day, observed annually with parades and military demonstrations.

Significance of Army Day

Army Day honours the bravery and sacrifice of soldiers who laid down their lives for the nation. Gallantry awards and Sena Medals are also presented on this day to recognise acts of courage and exceptional service.

The celebrations serve as a reminder of the Army’s role not only in defending borders but also in supporting civilians during emergencies and disasters.

Where Army Day parades were held earlier

Traditionally, the Army Day parade was held at Cariappa Parade Ground in Delhi Cantonment. In recent years, the Army has rotated the venue to different cities to strengthen public connect.

Apart from Delhi, cities such as Bengaluru, Lucknow and Pune have hosted the parade before Jaipur, making Army Day a truly national celebration.
