Australia launches $61.2 billion high-speed rail between Sydney and Newcastle, poised to become the most expensive infrastructure project in federal history
Once completed, the train network will stand as the most expensive infrastructure project in Australian federal history. Currently, the train journey between Sydney and Newcastle takes around two hours and 40 minutes.
Construction is slated to begin in 2027, with the project expected to finish by 2042.
Ahead of construction, the federal government announced seven major tenders for a transformative rail project that will cut travel time between Newcastle and Sydney’s CBD to one hour.
According 9News website, the $61.2 billion rail project is expected to be ready for construction within two years, with tenders issued for technical and architectural advice, environmental planning, and demand forecasting.
Companies vying for a role in the massive rail project can apply through the government’s online portal, with an expert panel set to review submissions and award contracts.
According to 9News website, with plans to extend the line to the new Western Sydney Airport, the total taxpayer cost is projected to reach $93 billion, while the government has committed $659.6 million to kickstart the development phase.According to the government, phase one will make Line One construction-ready, marking a significant step in realizing a “nation-shaping” high-speed rail network.
Minister for Infrastructure Catherine King said, “The expert teams we are seeking to appoint will help us form a detailed plan to deliver high-speed rail, supporting thousands of highly skilled jobs across engineering and project management in the process.”
The government projects that the rail line will carry over 16 million passengers annually, with a one-way fare set at $31. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said last month that high-speed rail linking Australia’s busiest regions “absolutely makes sense.”
